Redbud in Bloom at Brush-Everard House @ Colonial Williamsburg - Williamsburg, VA, USA
In 1781, Thomas Jefferson listed "redbud or Judas-tree" in his Notes on the State of Virginia as a native "Esculent" tree. The name "Judas-tree" derives from the belief that Judas Iscariot hanged himself from this tree species after he betrayed Jesus. Jefferson planned to use redbud on the western slope of Monticello and at Poplar Forest. John Custis referred to growing redbud in correspondence with Peter Collinson in 1735.
