During the American Civil War, a few hundred Greene County residents sympathetic to the Union cause refused to serve in the Confederate States Army. In April 1862, General Stonewall Jackson sent two companies to capture the deserters hiding in Hensley Hollow. The expeditions captured 48 deserters and dispersed the rest.
