Roundhead Ridge is in the front left of this image from Tanners Ridge Overlook. In the valley is the town of Stanley. The smoke rising is coming from someone clearing land near Browns Hollow. US Rt. 211 passes through New Market Gap to US Rt. 11 at New Market. New Market Gap is a wind gap that slices through Massanutten Mountain ridge.
During the American Civil War, on May 13th, 1864, Union Colonel William Boyd led 300 1st New York Cavalry troopers west through New Market Gap on a scouting mission. Boyd's soldiers were ambushed by the 18th Virginia Cavalry and the 23rd Virginia Cavalry as Boyd's troops exited the gap. One hundred of Boyd's 300 troopers were killed, wounded, or missing.
