Double-crested Cormorants - Jamestown, VA, USA
These Double-crested Cormorants are drying their feathers because their plumage lacks the oil that makes them waterproof. Wet feathers may make it easier for Cormorants to hunt underwater. Cormorants are controversial because it is believed they prey on fish raised at fisheries and reduce sport fishing stocks. Cormorant guano can also kill trees and shrubs under their nests. I have noticed a significant increase in the number of Cormorants in Central and Tidewater, Virginia, over the last ten years.
