Home being raised on stilts - Ocracoke, NC, USA
In September 2019, Hurricane Dorian's 7-foot storm surge sent water from the Pamlico Sound, spilling over the village, flooding homes, destroying businesses, and altering the lives of several hundred residents. Floodwaters in the town reached the greatest depths since a 1944 storm. When we visited in May 2021, we saw many homes like this one being raised on stilts to protect them from future hurricanes.
