British Cemetery - Buxton, NC, USA
On April 9th, 1942, German U-Boat U-203 torpedoed and sank the Motor Vessel (MV) San Delfino, a British armed tanker off Pea Island. Twenty-eight of her 50 crew died when their lifeboat moved into a pool of burning aviation fuel.
About a month later, two bodies washed up on Hatteras Island were buried with full military honors in the British Cemetery near Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton, North Carolina. One of the bodies was Fourth Engineer Michael Cairns, 28, son of Henry and Amy Cairns of Dundee, Scotland. The identity of the other sailor remains unknown.
