Grave of Michawel Cairns - 4th Engineer @ British Cemetery - Buxton, NC, USA
Fourth Engineer Michael Cairns, 28, son of Henry and Amy Cairns of Dundee, Scotland, died when German U-Boat U-203 torpedoed his ship MV San Delfino on April 9th, 1942, off Pea Island, North Carolina. Cairns' body and an unknown sailor washed up on Hatteras Island a month later. Local citizens cared compassionately for the fallen, respectfully laying them to rest with military honors in the British Cemetery near Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in Buxton, North Carolina. Each year, a community ceremony honors the British seamen.
