Statue of Stephen I of Hungary (Alajos Stróbl, 1906) @ Fisherman's Bastion - Buda, Budapest, Hungary, EU
Stephen I (aka King Saint Stephen) was the last Grand Prince of the Hungarians and the first King of Hungary until he died in 1038. He unified the Carpathian Basin and protected his kingdom's independence by forcing the invading troops of Conrad II, Holy Roman Emperor, to withdraw from Hungary in 1030. He encouraged the spread of Christianity by meting out severe punishments for ignoring Christian customs.
