One of the impressive statues in Market Square is that of the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, Charles William Vane Stewart. An accomplished soldier, Lord Londonderry owned many of the coal mines in County Durham. He also built the port of Seaham to improve the shipment of coal from County Durham mines.
